Wouldn’t it be easy if this collection of stories had a single theme?
I do write about the headline crises of our time, and some of the stories do follow on from one another. But the world around us is bigger than we can safely assume we understand. It doesn’t lend itself to the simple explanations that fit beneath the headlines.
The passage of time, also, is a longer process than the immediate now – our understanding, even our headlines, will change over time.
At the heart of it all is human nature. What we are despite what we think we are. If I’m true to myself, I should trust my instincts and write the stories that come to me.
So that’s what I’ve done. This is a book for the end times. It's a book for the to-be-continued times. It's made up of stories and essays, all short.
